We understand you may probably have some questions before joining our club. Here are some frequently asked questions.

What experience do I need?

Our club caters for all experience levels ranging from the complete beginner to the experienced member with 10+ years of Toastmaster experience.

How often does the club meet?

The club meets every Monday night at 7:15pm at Halswell Bowling Club, with the exception of public holidays.

Do I need to bring along anything?

No, our club provides most of the equipment, however you may need to bring props along if they are required for your speech.

I am already a member of another Toastmasters Club can I transfer to Oakland's?

Yes, absolutely. Simply complete the new member form and select transferring member in the appropriate section.

What awards do I get from Toastmasters?

The Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, is an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

  • The opportunity to build up to 300 unique competencies

  • 11 specialized learning paths to choose from

  • Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere

  • Real-world, transferable skills

Each "path" has a number of levels. You receive an award for completing each level and an award when you complete the path completely!

In addition there are many competitions you can enter if you wish to participate in other optional events held at our club and at other clubs throughout Christchurch.


If I don't attend do I have to pay?

Payment is still required even if you choose not to attend a meeting.


I don't speak very good English can Oaklands help me with English tutoring?

Sorry we don't offer English language tutorials, you would be best to attend an ESOL class if English is your second language.
